My insurance doesn’t cover speech therapy- now what?

Unfortunately, this is a common issue with insurance companies. In situations where insurance does not cover speech therapy services, treatment is still available through private pay. Please see “financial information” tab for more information on pricing.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

It’s different for everyone- a speech/language evaluation can help determine what areas of strength your child has, along with what areas they may need extra work with. If you’re feeling like you have a hard time understanding your child, if they appear to be having difficulty with understanding you, or you just have general language concerns, an evaluation would be appropriate.

Should I “wait and see” if my child’s speech/language improves with time?

Most SLPs will tell you we discourage the “wait and see” approach when it relates to speech and language development. While sometimes children do grow out of speech or language delays, they also sometimes do not without intervention.

Look at it this way- if you bring your child to speech and they don’t need it, great! If they do need it, early intervention is the way to go. It’s never too early to work on communication skills.

What is the difference between a speech evaluation and a language evaluation?

A speech evaluation refers to assessment that specifically looks at how speech sounds are formed, what the voice sounds like, and speech fluency. This type of evaluation is ideal for those who do not appear to have any difficulty with their language use or comprehension. Speech evaluations only look at how the speech sounds. This is only recommended if there are no concerns related to language development.

A language evaluation refers to assessment that looks at language as a whole, and how people communicate with the world around them. This includes expressive language (how language is used), receptive language (how language is understood) and pragmatic language (how language is used and understood in a social context). These evaluations are generally a bit lengthier and involve more parts.
